How percentage change is calculated

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the absolute original value and multiply by 100. Using the absolute denominator keeps an increase positive even when the original value is negative.

Zero and negative starting values

100 to 120 is +20%; 100 to 80 is −20%. −100 to −80 is +20% under this convention. A zero starting value makes percentage change undefined, even for zero to zero; the absolute difference and direction are still shown.
