Common aspect ratios

1:1 — Square. Example: 1080 × 1080.

4:3 — Traditional displays and presentations. Example: 1600 × 1200.

3:2 — Common in photography. Example: 6000 × 4000.

16:9 — Widescreen video and displays. Example: 1920 × 1080.

9:16 — Vertical video. Example: 1080 × 1920.

21:9 — Ultrawide. Displays with 2560 × 1080 pixels are often marketed as 21:9; their exact ratio is 64:27.

How aspect ratio is calculated

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between width and height. To simplify whole-pixel dimensions, divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor: the largest number that divides both evenly.

For 1920 × 1080, that number is 120. Dividing gives 1920 / 120 = 16 and 1080 / 120 = 9, so the aspect ratio is 16:9.

Aspect ratio vs resolution

Aspect ratio describes the shape; resolution gives the width and height in pixels. The resolutions 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440 and 3840 × 2160 all have the same 16:9 shape, but different pixel counts.

Pixel density also depends on physical size. Use the DPI / PPI Calculator to relate pixel dimensions to screen or print size.

Where aspect ratios matter

Photos, videos, monitors and presentations use aspect ratios to fit their frame. Vertical media uses a taller frame, while widescreen content uses a wider one.

When resizing, preserve the ratio to avoid stretching. To change the shape by trimming the edges, use the Image Cropper.

Practical example

Use the ratio to preserve an image's shape when choosing a new size. Width and height must use the same unit; a ratio alone does not specify resolution.

A 1920 × 1080 image simplifies to 16:9. Keeping that ratio at a width of 1280 gives a height of 720, so 1280 × 720 has the same shape.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a missing resize dimension?

For a W:H ratio, height = width × H / W and width = height × W / H. Editing either resize field calculates the other, rounded to a whole pixel. Halving 1920 × 1080 gives 960 × 540.

Why can decimal dimensions give a surprising simplified ratio?

The simplified ratio uses dimensions rounded to whole pixels. Enter integer pixel dimensions when you need an exact reduced ratio.

Does this calculator edit an image file?

No. It calculates dimensions and proportions without loading or changing an image. Apply the resulting dimensions in an image editor or resizing tool.
