Margin versus markup

Profit = selling price − cost. Margin = profit / selling price × 100%. Markup = profit / cost × 100%. With cost 60 and price 100, profit is 40, margin is 40% and markup is about 66.67%.

Finding a selling price

For desired margin m, price = cost / (1 − m/100); m must be below 100%. For markup u, price = cost × (1 + u/100). A ratio with a zero denominator is shown as not applicable. Include the costs relevant to your comparison; taxes and overhead are not added automatically.
